Therapist Serving Pine Island, FL — Living Well Counseling & Consulting

Therapy for Pine Island residents at our Cape Coral office or via telehealth.

Pine Island is unlike anywhere else in Southwest Florida. As the largest island on Florida's Gulf Coast without a beach, it has long attracted people who prefer a quieter, more self-reliant way of life over the resort-town atmosphere found elsewhere in Lee County. The island's communities — Matlacha, Bokeelia, St. James City, and Pineland — each have their own character, united by a shared connection to fishing, tropical fruit farming, and the surrounding waters of Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor.

That independence and resilience were tested severely when Hurricane Ian made landfall in September 2022. The storm destroyed the Pine Island Road bridge that connects the island to Cape Coral, temporarily cutting off the community from the mainland. Homes were flooded, boats were tossed inland, and the colorful fishing village of Matlacha — with its art galleries and waterfront restaurants — suffered catastrophic damage. While the bridge was rebuilt quickly and physical reconstruction has progressed, the emotional toll of Ian lingers for many Pine Island residents.

Hurricane Recovery and Mental Health

The psychological impact of a major hurricane extends far beyond the immediate aftermath. Many Pine Island residents continue to experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress — flashbacks during heavy rain, difficulty sleeping when wind picks up, a persistent sense of dread as each new hurricane season approaches. Others are dealing with grief over lost homes, lost livelihoods, and the permanent changes to the island they love. Some have watched neighbors and friends leave Pine Island for good, shrinking the close-knit community that made the island feel like home.

Our therapists at Living Well Counseling & Consulting understand the specific emotional landscape of disaster recovery. We use EMDR therapy to help clients process traumatic memories from the storm, reducing the intensity of flashbacks and intrusive thoughts so they can move forward. We also work with clients on anxiety management strategies that address the ongoing uncertainty of living in a hurricane-vulnerable area.

Serving a Rural Island Community

Pine Island's rural character means that mental health resources on the island itself are extremely limited. There are no therapy offices in Bokeelia or St. James City, and the few practitioners in the area often have long wait lists. Living Well fills this gap with two options: in-person sessions at our Cape Coral office, which is approximately 25 minutes from the Pine Island Road bridge, and telehealth therapy, which is especially valuable for island residents.

Telehealth eliminates the need to cross the bridge entirely — a meaningful advantage for residents who remember the isolation of having that single access point severed during Ian. It also works well for commercial fishermen, farmers, and small business owners on the island whose schedules do not easily accommodate a round-trip drive to the mainland. Sessions happen via our secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, with the same licensed therapists who provide in-person care.

Beyond hurricane-related trauma, we serve Pine Island residents dealing with depression, relationship difficulties, family conflict, and the challenges of aging in a remote community. For Pine Island families with teenagers, our adolescent therapy services provide support for young people who may feel isolated by the island's geographic separation from their mainland peers.
