Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Cape Coral & Fort Myers, FL — Living Well Counseling

Specialized trauma treatment. Veterans and first responders welcome.

Trauma changes the way you experience the world. It can leave you feeling constantly on guard, emotionally numb, disconnected from the people you love, or trapped in memories that replay without warning. Whether your trauma stems from a single overwhelming event or years of adverse experiences, the effects are real, valid, and treatable. You do not have to keep living in survival mode.

At Living Well Counseling & Consulting, our licensed therapists specialize in trauma and PTSD treatment for individuals throughout Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Pine Island, and all of Southwest Florida. We provide a safe, compassionate space where healing can begin — at your pace, on your terms. Our team includes therapists trained in EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, and somatic approaches, ensuring we can match you with the treatment modality that best fits your needs.

Living in Southwest Florida brings its own unique trauma experiences. From the devastation of hurricane seasons to the challenges faced by the large veteran and military community in our area, we understand the specific pressures our neighbors carry. If you have been struggling with anxiety, nightmares, emotional numbness, or other symptoms that seem connected to past events, we are here to help you move from surviving to thriving.

How Trauma & PTSD Therapy Can Help

Trauma therapy provides a structured, evidence-based pathway to processing painful experiences and reducing their hold on your present life. When trauma goes unprocessed, the brain remains stuck in a state of threat detection — constantly scanning for danger, reacting intensely to triggers, and struggling to distinguish between past and present. Therapy helps your nervous system recalibrate so you can respond to life with greater flexibility and calm.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of our primary treatment modalities for trauma and PTSD. EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories through bilateral stimulation, allowing them to be stored in a way that no longer generates intense emotional and physical reactions. Many clients experience significant relief within a relatively short period, making EMDR one of the most efficient trauma treatments available.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is another core approach we use. TF-CBT helps you understand the connection between your traumatic experiences and your current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through structured sessions, you learn to challenge trauma-related cognitive distortions, develop healthy coping strategies, and gradually reduce avoidance behaviors that may be limiting your life.

For clients whose trauma is held deeply in the body, we also incorporate somatic approaches that address the physical dimension of trauma. Trauma is not just a mental experience — it lives in the body as tension, pain, numbness, and dysregulation. Somatic techniques help you reconnect with your body in a safe way and release stored traumatic energy, complementing the cognitive work of therapy.

Serving Veterans and First Responders

Living Well Counseling & Consulting is deeply committed to supporting the men and women who serve our communities and our country. Veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders face unique trauma exposures — from combat and operational stress to repeated encounters with human suffering and life-threatening situations. We understand that these experiences require specialized, culturally sensitive care.

Our therapists are experienced in working with military and first responder populations and understand the unique barriers to seeking help that these communities often face, including concerns about stigma, career impact, and the pressure to appear strong. At Living Well, we create an environment where your service is honored and your struggles are met with respect, not judgment. We accept TRICARE, VA Community Care, and CHAMPVA to ensure that those who have served can access the care they have earned.

Our Approach to Trauma Treatment

Our approach to trauma therapy is grounded in the principle of safety first. Before any processing of traumatic material begins, we focus on stabilization — helping you develop the internal resources, coping skills, and sense of safety needed to engage with difficult memories without becoming overwhelmed. This phase-based approach is considered the gold standard in trauma treatment.

We recognize that trauma affects every person differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Some clients respond best to EMDR, while others prefer the structured cognitive approach of TF-CBT. Some need a combination of modalities. Your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment and collaborate with you to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs, preferences, and goals.

Throughout the therapeutic process, we prioritize your autonomy and agency. Trauma often involves a loss of control, so our therapy intentionally restores it. You will never be pressured to discuss something before you are ready, and you will always be informed about what to expect in each phase of treatment. If you are uncertain whether your experiences warrant therapy, consider reading about signs it may be time to talk to a therapist.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first trauma therapy session is focused entirely on building a foundation of trust and understanding. Your therapist will take the time to learn about your history, your current symptoms, and what brought you to therapy now. You will not be asked to recount your trauma in detail during this initial meeting — that is not what the first session is for.

Instead, your therapist will explain the treatment options available to you, answer your questions about the therapy process, and begin to assess which approach may be most effective for your situation. You will also have the opportunity to share what you are hoping to get out of therapy and any concerns you may have about the process.

By the end of the first session, you will have a clear sense of next steps and a preliminary treatment plan. Sessions are available in-person at our Cape Coral office and via secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Florida. We understand that getting to a first appointment can be the hardest step, and we do everything we can to make it as comfortable as possible.
